Bitter Melon Extract Powder

Product Description

Raw Material Introduction

Momordica charantia (commonly known as bitter melon or balsam pear) is conventionally cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, including East Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and South America.

Why Bitter Melon Extract Powder Helps Manage Blood Sugar

The value of bitter melon extract lies in its well-documented hypoglycemic activity. The extract contains steroidal saponins (such as momordicin), insulin-like peptides, and alkaloids. These compounds work together to stimulate insulin release and inhibit glucose formation in the bloodstream, making balsam pear extract particularly relevant for diabetes support products, especially for non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

Two key bioactive substances are responsible for this function:

(1) Momordicin

A crystalline compound obtained from ethanol extraction of the fruit. At a controlled dose of 50 mg/kg, momordicin reduced blood glucose by 42% in experimental rabbits. It exhibits both pancreatic and extra-pancreatic effects, along with mild antispasmodic and anticholinergic properties.

(2) Polypeptide‑p (also known as p‑insulin or plant insulin)

This is a macromolecular polypeptide with a structure similar to bovine insulin, consisting of two polypeptide chains linked by disulfide bonds. When administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly, it lowers blood glucose in diabetic patients. Unlike bovine insulin, which peaks at around 2 hours, the peak effect of polypeptide‑p occurs 4–8 hours after administration – offering a longer duration of action that may benefit formulation strategies for sustained‑release products.

Safety Considerations for Product Development

When formulating with balsam pear extract, buyers should note:

  • High doses may cause diarrhea. Appropriate use levels should be established based on the target product and population.

  • Individuals with hypoglycemia or insulin‑dependent diabetes should avoid products containing balsam pear extract unless under professional supervision.

These considerations are important for proper labeling and consumer guidance.
