The main component of Lonicera japonica extract is chlorogenic acid, also known as caffeic tannic acid, which is a depsipeptide formed from eafeic acid with quinic acid and belongs to the phenylpropanoid class of compounds. CGA is widely found in plants, present at higher levels in fl owers, Eucommia ulmoides, has a wide range of pharmacological actions, and is a phenylpropanoid produced by the plant body via the shikimate pathway during aerobic respiration.
Chlorogenic acid has a wide range of antimicrobial effects but is inactivated by proteins in vivo. Similar to caffeic acid, it increases central excitability in rats when administered orally or intraperitoneally. Increases small intestinal motility and tension of the rat uterus in rats and mice. Has a choleretic effect and can improve bile secretion in rats. It has a sensitizing effect on people, wheezing and dermatitis can occur after inhalation of plant dust containing this product.
