Roselle, also known as Luoshen flower, nightshade, and Sudan red, is a hibiscus-based annual herb from the Malvaceae family. It blooms in summer and autumn, with light yellow petals and a purplish red foundation. Roselle is a native of Africa. It was planted in Sudan some 6000 years ago. It thrives in African countries south of the Sahara Desert but cannot be grown in temperate regions. It was first brought to India and America in the seventeenth century. At the turn of the twentieth century, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and other Asian countries planted rose eggplants to generate fiber, which are now widely grown in subtropical and tropical locations.
