Thymus mongolicus Ronn is a semi-shrub with the scientific name Thymus mongolicus Ronn. It has ovoid leaves, a capitate inflorescence, a tubular bell-shaped or narrow bell-shaped calyx, and a purplish red, purple, or lilac, pink
corolla. It blooms between the months of July and August.
The little nut is spherical or oval in form. It can be used as a food additive. It has a peppery flavor and is often used in European cooking. It goes well with stew, eggs, and soup. I. Food & Seasonings
Culinary Seasoning
Thyme powder is most traditionally used as a food seasoning. It is one of the most essential spices in Western cuisine. It can be sprinkled over soups or stews, especially when the thyme flavor is desired without the leaves. It can also be mixed with other spices to make marinades for cooking meat and poultry.
Bakery Products
Studies have shown that biscuits containing 3% thyme leaf powder have the highest sensory acceptance. A 1:1 mixture of chamomile and wild thyme powder can replace 1%–3% of wheat flour in the development of functional bread. Spices such as thyme and rosemary have been incorporated into bakery formulations to enhance the nutritional and functional potential of the products.
Meat Processing
During refrigerated storage of Chinese sausages, experimental groups with added thyme powder demonstrated certain effects in controlling aerobic bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, and lactic acid bacteria. The antioxidant activity of thyme powder is more pronounced and stable than that of distilled extracts. Thyme essential oil has also been developed as a natural antimicrobial additive for food preservation.
II. Dietary Supplements
Thyme powder in the dietary supplement sector is primarily presented in capsules and tablets.
Respiratory Health
Arkocaps® Organic Thyme (France) provides 975 mg of thyme leaf powder per 3 capsules, with a primary function claim of "soothing the respiratory tract." BACTHYCITRUS (Belgium) combines thyme leaf powder (690 mg per 3 capsules) with grapefruit seed extract, similarly positioned for upper respiratory health support.
Herbal Compound Products
Thyme is already available in compound supplement products with other herbs. HerbEra offers USDA Organic certified thyme vegan capsules. Other products combine thyme with herbs such as rosemary and Pau d'Arco.
III. Cosmetics & Personal Care
Thyme extract and thyme essential oil offer a range of benefits, including fragrance and anxiolytic properties, skin brightening, moisturization, anti‑acne and anti‑inflammatory effects, photoprotection, anti‑aging, and hair care.
Skincare Products
Patented technology combines thyme extract with hydrolyzed pearl, hyaluronic acid, and other ingredients to produce moisturizing lotions. Thyme extract has been recommended for skincare applications. Thyme essential oil skincare lotions effectively relieve rough skin, improve skin quality, and increase skin elasticity.
Personal Care Products
Thyme extract can be used in perfumes, conditioners, face creams, shampoos, bath additives, and foot bath products.
Key Technologies
To address the low water solubility and high volatility of thyme essential oil, the industry has developed key technologies such as microencapsulation, nanocapsules, microemulsions, and nanoemulsions to enhance its efficacy in cosmetic applications.
