U.S. Expand the Scope of Spirulina Extract as Colorant
The US Food and Drug Administration released 82 FR 30731 and revised 21 CFR 73 part on July 3, 2017 regarding broadening the scope of Spirulina extract to be used in dyeing eggshell and determining the dosage in accordance with acceptable manufacturing standards.
Spirulina extract can be used as a safe colorant in candy (including chewing gum), frosting, ice cream and frozen desserts, dessert coating and decorative ingredients, blend and powder drink, yogurt, bavaroise, pudding, cheese, gelatin, bread, ready-to-eat cereal (excluding puffed grain), coating formula applied in dietary supplement tablet and capsule, and dyeing eggshell, according to the revised regulations.
